Eliminate the multiply and divide operation for children who have cognitive delays until they have mastered the addition and subtraction.

Extended Play

**Extra Ways to Play the Game**

Memory game. Turn over all the tiles. Each player turns over 2 tiles to try to find a match. Extras: There are 5 of each operator, so either remove one of each operator tile or let the extra be a spoiler that they have to remember is an extra. There are 6 of each number tile, so either 2, 4, or 6 of each can be turned over. You may give extra points for finding 4 or six of a number.

This modification builds visual spatial memory, a cognitive skill.

**Extra Ways to Play the Game**

A player creates the beginning of an equation with the tiles but does not provide the answer. Each other player tries to solve the original equation with as many additional equation pieces as possible resulting in the same answer. Each person gets 1 point for each tile added to the equation. For example, the first player writes: 8 x 2 =. another player can get 2 points for answering 16 (2 number tiles) or he/she can add on 4 x 2 + 8 for 5 points (3 number tiles and 2 operation tiles). Add multiplication and/or division to make the game harder. Give extra points for a X or a divided by operator.

Paper and pencils for practicing.

Children need a basic ability to add and subtract for an easy level of this game, and the ability to multipy and divide for a harder variation. This game variation requires ability to retain a number in the mind and then perform operations on that number that result in the same number. This ability to perform different operations in sequence requires higher level cognitive thinking. With assistance and support, children will gain self confidence about their math abilities.

Let children work in pairs or as a group to solve the problem. Draw a number tile. See how many equations the children can create with this number as an answer.

Experiment with how to make domino-like falling runs. Stand up the tiles in a line and knock over the first one. See what happens. Make a new line, curve, etc. Try it again. Try putting one tile on top of another. What else can you try?

This activity builds fine motor skills, as well as reinforcing a wide range of thinking skills. Also, depending on what other materials kids add and the different types of runs they make, this can be a very imaginative and creative activity.

How to Play Video & Transcript

You can play Sumology with 2 or more players, ages 8 and up.

Sumology is great for honing Operations skills, as players practice using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to build equations with their tiles

Sumology also helps with Problem Solving as players think of creative ways to utilize as many tiles as possible with the existing equation in the play area.

Place one “=” sign tile in the middle of the table as the starting tile. Turn all other tiles face down, mixing them up to create the draw area.

Sumology can be played by up to four individuals or in two teams of two or more. Each team receives a total of eight random tiles from the draw pile. Place these tiles standing up so that only they may see them.

Once all teams have their tiles, they must reveal their lowest number and the team with the lowest number goes first.

If there is a tie, they reveal their second lowest number, continue if necessary until the tie is resolved.

Score the most points by using as many tiles as you can. Your tiles must create valid equations.

The starting team must create a valid equation using the = starting tile on the table. After placing it, the player scores the equation. The team receives points equal to the total sum of all number tiles used in the equation, including any numbers that were already on the table.

After scoring the team draws back up to eight total tiles from the draw area, and their turn ends. Play continues clockwise.

Placing Equations

Each equation placed must contain one to eight tiles from the team’s stock of tiles, combined with one or more tiles already in play. All equations must be placed horizontally or vertically and in reading order, either left to right or top to bottom.

An equation may be placed alongside a previous placed equation. The tiles that align between the two equations need not create a valid equation on their own and are ignored. These tiles may be used to create new equations on later turns.

No tiles may be placed directly before or after and equation in play, these spaces remain empty throughout the game. No tiles may be rearranged or moved after being placed.

Creating Valid Equations

A valid equation must contain exactly one “=” tile.

In front of the “=” tile, the equation must contain at least two number tiles and one operator tile. Equations may not begin with an operator, and each operator must be between two numbers.

Can’t Place an Equation?

If a team places an equation that is shown to be incorrect, they must take those tiles back and try again to place a valid equation.

If an equation is not found to be incorrect until after a team’s turn has completed, then the tiles remain in play, and the team keeps the score earned.

When playing with younger players, try playing with addition and subtraction only by treating all “x” tiles as “+” tiles and all “÷” tiles as “−” tiles.

When a team cannot draw back up to a total of eight tiles from the draw area, they take the remaining tiles there are. From that point on, the teams must play only with the tiles in their hand.

Once the draw area is empty, the game ends when no team can create a valid equation on their turn. The teams then check their scores and the team with the highest score wins.

You can play Sumology with 2 or more players, ages 8 and up.

Sumology is great for honing Operations skills, as players practice using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to build equations with their tiles

Sumology also helps with Problem Solving as players think of creative ways to utilize as many tiles as possible with the existing equation in the play area.

Place one “=” sign tile in the middle of the table as the starting tile. Turn all other tiles face down, mixing them up to create the draw area.

Sumology can be played by up to four individuals or in two teams of two or more. Each team receives a total of eight random tiles from the draw pile. Place these tiles standing up so that only they may see them.

Once all teams have their tiles, they must reveal their lowest number and the team with the lowest number goes first.

If there is a tie, they reveal their second lowest number, continue if necessary until the tie is resolved.

Score the most points by using as many tiles as you can. Your tiles must create valid equations.

The starting team must create a valid equation using the = starting tile on the table. After placing it, the player scores the equation. The team receives points equal to the total sum of all number tiles used in the equation, including any numbers that were already on the table.

After scoring the team draws back up to eight total tiles from the draw area, and their turn ends. Play continues clockwise.

Placing Equations

Each equation placed must contain one to eight tiles from the team’s stock of tiles, combined with one or more tiles already in play. All equations must be placed horizontally or vertically and in reading order, either left to right or top to bottom.

An equation may be placed alongside a previous placed equation. The tiles that align between the two equations need not create a valid equation on their own and are ignored. These tiles may be used to create new equations on later turns.

No tiles may be placed directly before or after and equation in play, these spaces remain empty throughout the game. No tiles may be rearranged or moved after being placed.
