Suggestions for How to Modify Play Experience
For children who are not yet able to add up to 36, start by playing Fourmation without the cards or any addition. The goal of the game is the same: to get four-in-a-row. Play the game according to the rules of placing, controlling and locking a zone. Players take turns placing their Markers until someone is able to make a winning Fourmation.
For children who can add but have difficulty with complex strategy, play the game without the Controlling a Zone rules. In this variation, all Markers in a zone are "live". In other words, if two or more Markers of different colors are in a zone, the zone is not Controlled. This also means that stacking Markers is not required in this variation.
Communication
Suggestions for How to Modify Play Experience
Children with language comprehension issues may find the directions difficult to understand. Clarify the rules by demonstrating several versions of how to make a Fourmation, including Controlling and Locking a Zone. A visual explanation in addition to verbal will make the rules easier to understand. Encourage the child to demonstrate an example as well. This will enable the adult to see if the rules are understood.
Have children work in pairs. If possible, have a more advanced player teamed with a less advanced player. Working as a team will require children to discuss their strategy and add numbers together.

Suggestions for How to Modify Play Experience
If children have difficulty holding and manipulating several cards, make a simple card holder from construction paper. Fold a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 construction paper length wise to make a tent. Fold a 1/2 inch lip outward on one side of the tent. This is the ledge to support the cards.
For children who have difficulty manipulating and placing small objects, an adult or other player will need to assist by placing Markers as directed by the child. Team play may be helpful for these children.
Social Emotional/Behavioral
Suggestions for How to Modify Play Experience
Team play is recommended for children with low frustration tolerance and/or attention issues. In a team format, children will be able to help each other think through the options regarding their strategy, where they can place a Marker and which cards to play. Encourage players to discuss the justification for their ideas at each turn. This process builds negotiation skills.
If children seem to be placing Markers impulsively, the adult should ask the child to explain his or her rationale. Asking the child to justify a decision makes the child pause to think. If there is no logical reason for the placement, take the Marker and show the child two other spots the Marker could be placed. Ask the child which would be better. Giving choices helps the child narrow down the options, but also retain control.
If novice players are playing against more advanced opponents, allow the novice players to win if they get three-in-a-row before the advanced player(s) make a Fourmation. This will help level the game, therefore, novice players are more likely to win. Winning can support intrinsic motivation to keep playing and improving their skills.

How to Play Video & Transcript
Today, we’re going to tell you about Simply Fun’s awesome game of tactics and strategy, Fourmation. Fourmation is an amazing new game that elegantly combines math with strategy in a game of quadrants, challenges and control!
Fourmation can be played with 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, and takes about 30 minutes to play.
Inside every Fourmation box you’ll find:
• four quadrant boards
• eighty colored markers (20 purple, 20 red, 20 yellow and 20 green)
• fifty-five number cards
The 4 Fourmation quadrants can be placed in any order to form a square creating a unique experience for each game. Players get plenty of practice adding 2 digit numbers as they plan offensive strategies to take positions on the board, and defensive strategies to maintain their positions, as other players challenge them on the board.
To win at Fourmation, a player must connect four zones in a row in any direction, up, down or diagonally, by placing his colored markers in a winning “fourmation” on the board. It’s all about controlling the zones, so let’s get going!
To set up the game, place the quadrant boards together as shown to create a playing surface with 36 total zones randomly numbered from 1 to 36. Give each player 20 matching color markers. Shuffle the round number cards, deal 4 to each player, and place the rest face down near the board.
On each turn, players use one or more of their number cards to take a position on the board. For example, a player may choose a single card with the number 15 on it to take a position in Zone 15. Or, he may choose three cards with the numbers 5, 12 and 14, to take a position in Zone 31.
Note that each player puts their markers in the same position in each Zone around the board.
Players may use one or all of their cards in a turn and simply replace them from the draw pile to end the turn. If a player is unable to take a position with his assigned cards, he must discard them and draw four new cards. If the draw pile runs out, discards are reshuffled and used as the new draw pile.
Players continue to take positions until they control 4 zones in a row, BUT, other players can always challenge for control of a zone by adding up their cards to the same sum and placing their markers in a zone as well.
To control a zone, a player must:
1) be the only player with a marker in that zone,
2) have at least one more marker in a zone than any other player, OR
3) “lock” a zone by having two more markers than any other player which prevents all players from adding markers to the zone or challenging for control
Remember, until a zone is “locked” a player can continue to add markers to a zone to regain control.
The game ends when one player controls four zones in a row or diagonally in any direction.
If everyone runs out of markers before anyone controls four zones, all players calculate the sum of all the zones they control and the player whose controlled zones add up to the highest sum wins. If two or more players have the same sum, the player who controls the zone with the highest number wins.
